References: Hi I am looking for a package on the PC that would support a large number of text files 300 to "that many?". I would like it to look inside the file for reserved lines with a title, keywords, and dates, or it could be kept outside. This will probably start single or low n of users but it could expand. Any help[ pf the gracious PC community would be appreciated. -- Mike Upmalis (mupmalis@watarts)<University of Waterloo> ihnp4!watmath!watarts!mupmalis Chemistry is useful both in Modern Medicine and the treatment of Steel. Re: request for software supporting text databases: There is software available, in several categories. One is programs that will index text files created via other means. Probably the best of these is ZyINDEX (ZyLAB Corp, Chicago, 312-642-2201) This package comes in three versions, $145 - $695, supporting 500, 5000, 15000 files respectively. - this is a very powerful package (fast, too). Another category is text data managers, complete (with editor, etc). A de- cent one (according to reviews; have not actually tried it) is askSam (Seaside Software, Corpus Christi, 512-991-2019, $150) askSam will import text from other sources. A record, however, is restricted to apx. 1600 characters. - you can also use Framework - if you can stand the overhead, the lack of ran- dom indexing, and the purchase cost. greg pavlov, fstrf, amherst, ny harvard!talcott!wjh12!hscfvax!pavlov

PC-SIG offers a public domain text database called 3x5 (that's "3 by 5"). Essentially you to enter text in free form (i.e. as a 3x5 index card) and then performs searches on combinations of ASCII strings using a nifty signature analysis algorithm. Fields are not declared as search keys at any time. You'll have to determine whether or not this type of dbase is appropriate for your needs. -Eric -- UUCP: ...decvax!mcnc!duke!ear
