Now that my department has 4 PC's, each with a 10MB hard disk, it's time to think about backing them up. My ideal situation is to find a tape (cassette or otherwise) system that can plug into a serial port or parallel port and, with appropiate software, back up the hard disk. This way, one backup system can backup all our PC's (it's a waste to buy four backup's...). If you know how to do the above, please let me know. (Another idea would be software that can communicate with UNIX(tm) and upload files. In this case, the software should automatically search all my directories and backup on UNIX only those files that have been changed since the last backup. Xmodem protocal would be needed to insure proper transmission.) Marc S. Meketon ihnp4!hou2f!vifl

I just saw the blurb about FASTBACK problems, and was particularly interested in the $200 (not-copy-protected version) pricetag. Folks, for about $1000 (maybe less now - I got mine some time ago) you can purchase an outboard (cartridge-) tape backup unit that attaches to the floppy-disk-controller's external connector It will store up to 24 megabytes and (after formatting, which seems to take forever) it runs at approximately one minute per megabyte. In particular I have a Microsystems MT25, and I love it. (I won't bother to post address or 'phone number - I don't want this to be misconstrued as an advertisement. If you're interested enough you can find their advertisement in a pc-type of magazine somewhere.) Being an external device you can use it on as many PC's or XT's as you have in the office - or that you can carry the machine to. My *guess* is that legally you should have a copy of FASTBACK for each machine you want to use it on. Looks like the reliable, fast, many-user tape machine wins at about the 5-7 machines point. keith Keith Ericson at TekLabs (resident factious factotum) Tektronix, PO 500, MS 58-383 Beaverton OR 97077 (503)627-6042 uucp:[ucbvax|decvax|ihnp4|(and_many_others)]!tektronix!tekgvs!keithe CSnet:keithe@tek ARPAnet: keithe.tek@rand-relay
