I am helping implement a microcomputer project for our Honors students
here at Rutgers University, and I've got a pretty good idea of what I
want to do, but I'm not too sure about some of the details. I would
appreciate any possible help. I'm sorry if I happen to repeat
anything that has already been talked about, since I don't normally
read all of these newsgroups.
Here is what I am planning: our fund has $x to work with - not a large
sum, but adequate. I want to attach 5 AT&T 6300s to a Sunol hard
disk, and 2 Macintosh Pluses through a Sun-Mac to the same HD. I also
want to network all 7 machines to an HP LaserJet through AppleTalk.
The Mac Pluses will run the lastest version of the Finder and the
AT&Ts will run Microsoft Windows. As far as I know, the only laser
printer that Windows knows about is the LaserJet, so I can't use the
Apple LaserWriter. I'd also like to put an FX-85 on the Appletalk
network.
My goal is maximizing ease of use (for example, I don't want any of
the machines to have their own HD, so I don't have to worry abut users
flicking the power switch on their machines to reboot, and trashing
the HD; ease of use is also my reason for using Windows as the OS for
the AT&Ts) and lowering the cost (another reason for the LaserJet
instead of the LaserWriter).
What I am unsure about is the following. Are there LaserJet via
AppleTalk drivers for the Mac Plus? How about FX-85 via AppleTalk
drivers? Can I print a Windows Paint document (for example) to a
printer on the AppleTalk network like I am planning to, or is there
something else I will need? (I am planning to do this via
PC-MacBridge, will this work?) Is there anything else about my
proposed arrangement that looks unworkable?
Thanx in advance for any responses.
David
