Help ! My Unix PC has trouble booting. A green screen shows an icon labelled "working" (with a death star logo) and just sits there. It never gets to the login prompt. If any 7300 guru can help me with : a) can i boot the floppy file system up to diagnose my problem ? (how do i do that and get to the hard disk, more specifically...) b) can i back my hard disk outside the "office" ? c) can i fix the problem without reformatting my hard disk ? Any and all tips/answers/help (are)is appreciated...posted and emailed answers are OK. The previous denotes no inclination/disregard for the product (i like the 7300 features and functions). You may either have a serious hardware problem or (more likely) your file system on hard disk is trashed. >a) can i boot the floppy file system up to diagnose my problem ? You should be able to if only the file system and/or HD controller is bad. You can access the hard disk by mounting it under to floppy. If the ssytem then crashes, you KNOW the hard disk file system is garbage. You may be able to mess with the data if you have some super tool by accessing the disk via the device driver (dev/something), but I do not know of any. >b) can i back my hard disk outside the "office" ? Dont know. >c) can i fix the problem without reformatting my hard disk ? If the problem is not the file system (ie, still wont boot off floppy), then your disk should be OK.
