Several weeks ago I posted a request for assistance with a hard disk that was going "clunk, clunk, clunk" intermittently, and intermittently failing to respond to the PC until I cycled the power. Thanks to everyone who responded with advice and suggestions. The problem turned out to be simpler than anyone guessed. I opened up the external cabinet containing the disk drive and power supply so that I could attach some probes to the power supply. When I turned on the power, I noticed the power cable from the power supply to the disk drive was occasionally contacting the fan blades ("clunk, clunk, clunk" until the blades pushed the cable away). I disconnected the power cable from the disk drive, then put them back together again to test for deficiencies in the power supply. The disk drive has worked without flaw now for over two weeks. Apparently, the fan blades were jostling the power cable a little loose, causing the occasional need to cycle power. Clayton E. Cramer
