Is anyone aware of software for the IBM-PC to
identify file types? I am looking for a program similar to
/usr/bin/file on 4.xBSD UNIX systems. That program reads the beginning
of an input file and identifies it as "ascii text", or "pure executable
not stripped", or "C-language source", etc. It's not hard to recognize the
various printable file types, by looking for tokens specific to given
programming languages. However, to be really useful, the program must also
identify and distinguish between .obj, .com, .exe, files as well as recognizing
different types of binary data files.
Has anyone seen such a program? Thanks.
