[net.micro.pc] 8 Serial Ports for AT -- who can do it?

mdf@osu-eddie.UUCP (Mark D. Freeman) (05/20/86)

I am looking for a board that will enable us to hook 8 MODEMS to an IBM-AT.
I know that we will have to write our own communications software. I would
like to get a board that has drivers for SCO XENIX available, as well as being
able to be run from DOS. A smart board (i/o processor on board, etc.) would
be nice, but a dumb one will be OK for our DOS application. I would prefer to
use the same board for both though.

Thanks for any suggestions!

SCO supports two 8-port boards -
Arnet Controls 4 and 8 port (8250b version) and
Control Systems Hostess 4 and 8 port versions.

the Computone ATvantage-X smart serial expansion also has a driver for
SCO Xenix. Presumably you have to relink the Kernal (which requires
owning the software development package) in order to install the
Computone driver.

Don't know about the DOS/Xenix stuff but (a) Greenleaf sells a comm library
package that will work with some board they sell that offers 8 or more
com ports, (b) the latest pc week, may 20 on page 36, discusses a product
from Server Technology that can add up to 18 com ports to a pc in increments
of 6. For the latter try (800) 835-1515.
