[net.micro.pc] MKS Toolkit: UNIX-like utilities on DOS

steve@mks.UUCP (steve) (06/03/86)

The expanded MKS Toolkit, version 1.4, is a package of
UNIX-like software development tools designed for the
IBM PC, XT, AT, and compatibles.
These programs load and run under MS-DOS but
have the same functionality as their UNIX counterparts.
Recently added programs include awk, diff, sed, cpio, tee, and
c (produce columnized output). Also included is a full glob (for
filename expansion). The package now consists of over 60 utilities:

awk	banner	c	cal	cat	chmod	cmp	baseneame
comm	cp	cpio	cut	date	dd	dev	df
diff	dirname	du	echo	ed	egrep	expr	fgrep
file	find	gres	head	help	join	kill	lc
line	ls	mkdir	mv	nm	od	paste	prof
ps	pwd	rev	rm	rmdir	sed	size	sleep
split	strings	strip	sum	switch	tail	tee	test
time	touch	tr	uniq	unstrip	wc

Prof is a program profiler for DOS that reports execution time
per routine. It does not require re-compilation of the command.

Gee, I thought advertising wasn't allowed on the net. Just to give an
alternate point of view about those tools, many of them
can be found in the Public Domain SOFTARE TOOLS, written in
pascal. I don't know if anyone has ported them to MSDOS yet, but
I have seen the source code and it's written PASCAL/VS (IBM Mainframe)
I also know that a SOFTWARE TOOLS implementation is written in RatFor.

Now, I have never seen MKS toolkit, and there are functions on there that
are not in the SOFTWARE tools implementation, but I was just generally
offended that this newsgroup was being used for advertisement of a product
by the company as opposed to a consumer recomendation.

Of course, this represents my own opinion, not the university's or IBMs.

All the tools described in SOFTWARE TOOLS (written in Pascal and RatFor) are
now available as FreeWare in the Turing programming language. Turing is
available from the University of Toronto (utcsri!distrib or distrib@Toronto).
The translation of the Kernighan&Plauger SOFTWARE TOOLS was done at Queen's
University under the direction of Prof. J.R. Cordy.

I've got copies of the tools if you want them.

I got a pre-release copy of the MKS toolkit and am having some problems with
it -- the install doesn't complete, the rm hangs the computer, ls -lx acts
like ls -l... I'll send an update to this message after I've called MKS.
