Sorry if this subject has been hashed to death in this newsgroup; I don't
ordinarily subscribe, and it's not covered in our unexpired postings.
We're getting an RT with AT emulation board; 4Mb memory and 70Mb hard disk.
We have a database that's now 17Mb ascii, and is in record-oriented form.
We will be adding more info, which will bring it up to 25-30Mb.
We want to be able to query this database and produce plots and histograms
as well as lists of "hits." Talking to some PC hackers, I've been told that
Lotus and Symphony are limited to what can fit in main memory. Other than
that, things like dBaseII or III don't have graphics, but can output formats
that graphics programs understand. This approach assumes we'd be using the
AT emulation mode.
On the other hand, there are some AIX products that IBM is touting; SQL, and
(I guess) its back-end; this is probably better than the AT route if there's
no appropriate package that includes both graphics and database. (I originally
started thinking along AT lines because of the vast amount of software available
for PC's.)
Obviously, I'm not a PC hacker; in fact, I've never even touched a PC! I could
write my own software, but would rather not, if I can avoid it. So if you know
a package that would fit my needs, I'd appreciate a reply. If you know a
product to stay away from, that would help, too. If you know of something in
the public domain, that would be peachy-keen. A net-mail reply to the address
below would probably be most appropriate, but I'll also be monitoring this
newsgroup for anything relevant.

Shenkin Columbia Univ. Biology Dept., NY, NY 10027 SQL/RT is Oracle with an IBM logo on it. Oracle sells Oracle for PC-DOS. Part of Oracle (version 5, anyway) is Oracle*Graph. I don't know if SQL/RT is version 5 or not, and thus, whether Oracle*Graph comes with it or not. I'd suggest doing some analysis to see if you were likely to need PC software. If not, AIX Oracle (SQL/RT) will probably perform a lot better.
