[net.micro.pc] question about ansi.sys and ega

al@condor.UUCP (Al Gudaitis) (06/18/86)

I hope someone can explain why my AT (which has an EGA card) hangs up when I
send an escape sequence to the terminal device. If I create a file with the
following sequence of characters "ESC [ 2 J" (the ANSI clear-screen code) and
issue the command, "TYPE filename" where filename contains the above escape
sequence, the computer clears the screen, does not print a new prompt, and
ceases to respond to any commands on the keyboard. In fact, continued typing
on the keyboard eventually produces a beeping, obviously signifying that a
keyboard buffer is full. The config.sys file does set device=ansi.sys but
maybe I should be setting it equal to some other thing for EGA cards? I hope
somebody can explain and solve my problem (I can't run microemacs this way).

I believe that I read somewhere that ANSI.SYS does not support the EGA card.
Except when in CGA compatable mode, but in EGA mode, nope.

This information doesn't help you, but at least you know why.

Now....if I am wrong, I am sure another netter will set me straight.

I believe the nansi.sys driver posted to net.sources a while back does support
the EGA.

I have never had any problem using ansi.sys with my Quad EGA+, but I
would highly recommend using NANSI.SYS (posted to the net a while back)
instead. This driver fully supports the EGA, even the 43 line mode.

I don't know why Ben Broder ( {ihnp4,decvax} !hjuxa!catnip!ben ) has not had
problems with ansi.sys on his Quad EGA+ but it certainly does not work on IBM's
EGA. Maybe he is running DOS 3.2? However, in case there are others who have
had a similar problem to mine, let me say that nansi.sys has worked fine with
my EGA (though now I seem to have some debugging to do with my microemacs as it
does not clear the screen properly at the start of a session). Thanks to the
net for helping me out with my problem.
