I just got a EGA card from Basic Time. I was not very pleased with what I got. First of all, it did not run the more complicated programs written for the CGA card. The manual said it was "bios level compatible," but I found out how far that gets me with some programs. It also has some switches and jumper with which I am supposedly able to make it emulate many other cards, including the CGA. This also failed to work properly. I am now looking for other EGA cards that are truly compatible to CGA. I would appreciate mail from some of you knowledgable folks. If I get a large enough response and interest, I'll post the results to this group. thanks in advance. bing

In response to the article about EGA cards that are not truly 100% CGA compatible, I am using a VUTEK EGA. Following is what is printed on Vutek's flyer: PC/XT/AT Compatible Monochrome Graphics (IBM) compatible 16 Colors: 64 Color Palette IBM EGA Compatible Hard and Soft Switchable Switchable in-slot 256K RAM Standard Remembers Past Video Mode on warm reset Easiest EGA to use Highest reliablity (how do they know this stuff?..Subjective) "Single Chip" EGA Design IBM MDA Hardware register equivalent IBM CGA Hardware register equivalent Total downward compatibility Will pass IBM CGA diagnostics works with Lotus 123 1A (CGA) works with Lotus 123 2.0 works with symphony 1.0 works with Sidekick (CGA) works with Flight Simulator (CGA) works with Flight Simulator I works with Flight Simulator II Confidence in software compatibility Vutek 2-year "swap out" warranty -------------------------------------------------- I cannot verify that the VUTEK is 100%, but it has worked with all the programs I want. I use Sidekick to demo the card and have run Framework II set up for CGA with no problem. Also, it could be that the performance on the card is covered up by the NEC Multisync monitor that is running off the card, which I consider to be possibly the best EGA monitor available price/performance wise. I have no relationship to VUTEK or NEC. Aloha, from EGA heaven, Jonathan Spangler {ihnp4,vortex,dual}!islenet!jons
