[net.micro.pc] Advice Needed: Real Time O.S. and the PC-AT

cfs@uvacs.UUCP (01/28/86)

Help,

We are in need of some information about real-time operating systems on
the PC-ATs. We are developing an application where several ATs need to
share a lot of information with fairly tight time restrictions on the
message passing. Micnet and its rcp are way to slow, and we haven't
gotten uucp to work fast enough either.

We have found that as we expected XENIX does not offer the facilities we
need, prioritized operation of multiple concurrent tasks. A previously
posted article mentioned that VENIX does offer some priority operation.
What other operating systems have people used that they would recommend?

As another point of attack, what luck have people had in interfacing XENIX
to various LANs. Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Cathy Summers ...!decvax!mcnc!ncsu!uvacs!cfs

A recent issue of PC Tech Journal mentioned that Intel's iRMX is available
for the PC family for $$$.

iRMX may be the kinf of OS you're looking for. Prioritized tasks with
shared memory, regions, semaphores, &c. The article gives an overview.

RMX is extensively documented, in poorly organized manuals.

Native language is PL/M, compiler produces good code. C is also available.

Next time you're in town you can take a look at our manuals.

						Howdy!
