[net.micro.pc] MS Windows Questions: Extra memory and documentation.

[]

The Humanities Computing Project at Duke has just purchased the
MS Windows Development System, and I am now vacilating between
sheer admiration of the nifty programs included with Windows and
sheer panic over the documentation (or lack thereof) regarding
technical aspects of Windows and DOS. I would welcome any words
of wisdom and warning from other Windows users (via mail please),
but am especially plagued with three questions.

1. Extended/expanded memory

We purchased a 2MB Rampage memory board to give Windows plenty of
RAM. Unfortunately Windows seems to recognize neither extended
memory, expanded memory, nor any combination of the two. I have
found nothing in the development system documentation that covers
the issue of memory > 640K. How do I make Windows look for the
extra memory?

2. Documentation

I acknowledge that I am presumptious to ask this question, having
spent only about a day in the manuals. Nonetheless, my first
instinct was to look for technical details on how Windows works
with DOS and the hardware (memory, peripherals, etc). I have
found no such discussion. Are my questions answered in bits and
pieces throughout the manuals? Have I overlooked something? Is
there another document that deals with these issues? Am I simply
a spoiled hacker asking questions I ought not? I would like to
continue about the documentation, but will wait until my opinions
reflect more experience.

Peace,

I can't help you on the documentation but your problem with Windows and EMS
memory is that the extra memory is only indirectly supported in Windows. I use
a THESYS FASTCARDIV EMS system ( 2Mbyte) with Windows by supplying a RAMDISK in
the EMS space as disk "d:". Windows will use this for its paging space if you
modify the win.ini file to direct TEMP to d:. One more point, note that the
VDISK program supplied with Windows only supports an INTEL ABOVE Board EMS
system. Any other EMS system must be used with its own VDISK package. Good
luck.
