First, thanks to all who responded to my earlier article on Zenith Z-100s. It looks like a reasonable, although slightly dated machine that is currently selling at large discounts. Second, both my son and Jerry Pournelle (BYTE, August 1986 column) have indicated that the USAF Academy, Colorado Springs, CO, will be issuing Zenith Z-248 PCs (NOT Z-100!!). I don't have any information about Z-248 in my copy of the Heathkit catalog. SOOO- Does anyone have any feedback re: the Zenith Z-248 PC, supposedly an IBM PC-AT clone, that they would be willing to share either with me, or with the net? If my mailbox warrants it, I will summarize mail responses. Thanks. ----------------------- James Van Ornum, AT&T (Information Systems), houxu!jhv (201) 949-1781

I read the article by Jerry Pournelle and I believe that he indicated that the USAFA was going to require cadets to purchase the PC, not be issued one. -- Harold Bamford AT&T Bell Labs (cornet) 8-367-5744 Naperville, Ill (312) 979-5744

It still means that Uncle Sam will pick up the tab, not the cadet. Of course, if they spend more than the allowance, they pay the difference. The '200 is an AT compatible, and was selected by the US Government to be THE machine for the military - as was the '100 a few years back. I haven't seen one, but Clarkson has had them for a while and reports are excellent. The machine is supposedly EXTREMELY compatible with the AT, plus has other little features. However, not having my hands on one, I can't really say too much in detail.. Why not go request a Heath catalog? Has lots of information in it about all of their computers... -dg- ....!philabs!sbcs!helm!dave ....!trixie!polyof!helm!dave <note: ...!chinet!helm!dave is no longer a valid path... :-(> Disclaimer: I don't work for nobody, so I don't represent anyone's views or lack thereof..
