Just got a pleasing letter today from ADAPSO announcing the demise of a hardware-based copy-protection mechanism. ADAPSO took this action after polling almost 1500 persons and determining that there is insufficient support to warrant the promulgation of a voluntary, industry-wide standard. We thank you for your interest and concern. Sincerely, ADAPSO 1300 North Seventeenth Street Suite 300 Arlington, Virginia 22209 (703) 522-5055 Telex: 4993994

The news that ADAPSO has withdrawn its support for the "hardware key" method of software "authorization" is one of the most positive and reasonable steps I can imagine. It's obvious from the industry trend that copy protection is going nowhere; I was getting ready to get REALLY annoyed at having to dangle a bauble from my PC. Kudos to ADAPSO for a decision that could not have been easy to reach, although it was right. -D. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------- -David M. My heavens! A sensible action at last. Next we'll hear that software is actually supposed to perform as stated, shrink-wrap "licenses" notwithstanding.
