[net.micro.pc] Tandon 40meg drive for the 6300 PLUS

PC6300 PLUS users/abusers:

Seeing that UNIX SVR2 is now available in numbers and that with the
development set it takes about 11 megabytes, I am sending out the
notes I kept when I installed the Tandon 40meg in my PLUS. This is a
very popular drive around here for a couple of reasons: it has been
qualified for the PLUS by AT&T, it is a half-height drive, it seeks in
the sub-40 millisecond range (compared to 85ms for the std. 20meg) and
it is not too expensive (~$700). If you have any questions feel free to call.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

o Installing a Tandon TM755 Revision 003H MLC22 40 meg
half-height drive (about $700) in the PLUS:
     1) remove the 20meg
     2) install the 40meg in its place
(note: I removed the black plastic face plate from
the front of the 40meg so that it fit behind
6300 cover. Alternatively, you can leave the
face plate on and remove the part of the 6300
cover that is in front of the drive, but this
		is *alot* harder to do.)
     3) change motherboard DSW-1 switch 4 from OFF to ON
     4) crank up the Systems Diagnostics. Note: this is NOT
the regular diagnostic disk that comes with system,
it's the diagnostic disk that comes with the 6300
PLUS Service Manual. Further, you must have version
1.11 or better to be able manipulate the 40meg drive.
     5) the diagnostics should display the memory size, memory
size switch setting, and the following hard disk info:
         "HDU switch set: 3" and
         "HDU type : cyl 981 , hd 5"
     6) run the Systems Diagnostic low-level format
(follow the menus down and select diagnosing the
40meg drive ONLY. Select the low-level format
with the default interleave factor of 3. This
         process takes about ten minutes).
     7) after the low-level format, run the verify surface
diagnostic. This tests each track and if it finds
a problem, adds it to the bad track table (10 minutes
         again).
     8) after surface verification, edit the bad track
table adding any bad tracks that are on the label stuck
to the disk drive itself and that do not already appear
         in the bad track table.
     9) install UNIX. Note that the fdisk
program will prompt you for a percentage of the disk to
be allocated to UNIX. It prompts for a number between 80
and 100, but any number between 1 and 100 will work.

The address for Tandon is: 71 Splitbrook Rd.
