[net.micro.pc] Microport UN*X

A friend of mine is interested in Microport UN*X. Does anyone have
experience of the version. In particular, how good is the compiler, what
type and how severe are the known bugs, and how many users can it support?

Thanks in anticipation.

I have recently purchased System V from Microport. The first impressions were
quite positive. (I had to stop evaluation because they keep using this AT for
other things than leaving it to me).
The system installs in less than an hour in very user friendly manner. The con-
figuration I have is the basic system plus the compiler package. This version
is for two users (but you can upgrade for ~$90 to, I believe, eight users).
I haven't spend to much money in upgrading the system I am using so I run it on
an AT with 10 Mhz and 512kbyte. After the system runs there are about 260kbyte
left for user processes. They say the system is set up for 1Mbyte and more to
fully experience it's performance. Without serious measurements I had the feeling
it compiles with about the speed of an AT and 8Mhz (I compiled MicroEmacs with it)
The console uses some ANSI sort of driver (uemacs actually didn't perform as I
expected which could be the fault of either the ANSI driver in UNIX or in UE.
A very nice feature is that you can switch between four virtual consoles by just
using function keys. But that works only on the shell level and not while you are
interacting with a user program (i.E. uemcas).

More about it when I get an AT again.
