I want to use a PC jr in an area where its continuous fan noise is not acceptable. In this application the PC is on 24 hours a day monitoring somme (noiseless) equipment, and would rarely (if ever) access its disk after startup. Can Iomehow get away with disconnecting the fan, or replacing it with something a lot quieter or that runs only ocassionally? -- Ken Mandelberg Emory University Dept of Math and CS Atlanta, Ga 30322 {akgua,sb1,gatech,decvax}!emory!km USENET km@emory CSNET km.emory@csnet-relay ARPANET

I had my fan disconnected for a while because it was driving me nuts. I have a PCjr with a Racore expansion chassis. After a while, I started experiencing problems with the Racore disk drive. The excess heat caused the drive belt to slip on its pulley. I also noticed that disks out of both disk drives were quite warm when I took them out. This is not good for them. Then again, my PCjr sits in an enclosed space which provides poor ventilation. With an unexpanded PCjr, sitting in an unobstructed area, this should not be a problem. By the way, do NOT just disconnect the fan, REMOVE it. To do this, remove the disk drive by unsnapping the disk drive mounts from the bottom of the PCjr's case, unscrew the fan from the back, and reinstall the disk drive. If you leave an unoperating fan in place, it will block airflow.
