I've been using Microsoft Windows for a while, and I have yet to figure out
the memory management scheme. I'm wrestling with four problems:
1. Some programs that require relatively little memory seem to take over
all of it. Turbo Pascal programs do this. The "Maximum Memory" entry in
the Windows .PIF file seems to have no effect. Limiting the heap and data
size in Turbo seems to have no effect.
When this problem manifests itself, choosing the "About..." option in the
Executive menu shows very little RAM left.
2. Other programs seem to occupy RAM in anomalous ways. The "About..."
menu will show lots of RAM remaining, but new programs can't be started.
3. How do I run batch files? Specifically, how do I run RUNBBS.BAT for a
FIDO BBS? This is a batch file that calls a relatively large .EXE file.
Both of them have .PIF entries. Changing the Memory Desired/Required
values seem to have no effect.
4. How do you make a job in a window "sleep"? Int(40h)?
I've tried KERMIT and MINITEL in windows -- both run fine in a window, and
allow you to do other things during file transfer. FIDO runs in a window if
you don't start it from RUNBBS.BAT. It eats up a lot of cpu time when idle,
though, which is irritating.
