add to your mode statement the ,p switch, which tries forever in the 
case of device timeouts (if your device holds the handshake lines
too long, you can get these)

mode com1:12,n,8,1,p
                  ^^
                  important.

This assumes that you already have the port working correctly, but the
character-consuming device can't eat the characters quickly enough.
