[net.micro.pc] Mail-order companies

People have been discussing problems with mail-order firms so I thought I'd put
my two cents in (I just got off the phone and I'm still warm). The company in
question is Warehouse Data Products. I ordered a Microsoft C compiler and a
generic serial port in late August. The compiler arrived in reasonable time
given that Microsoft may not have shipped them promptly. Two months later, I've
yet to recieve the serial port. Several phone calls have elicited various
responses including the latest which was that it would be sent out today.
I'll believe it when I see it. They appear to me to have a very poorly organized
bookkeeping system and/or inventory control. They also have a nasty habit of
telling you they'll call you back tomorrow and not doing so. If you are thinking
of ordering from them, my experience may provide some food for thought. I
don't know whether all their customers get treated this way but they will get
no more of my business.

On a related issue. My C compiler came with no users guide and two library
manuals. As instructed by MS, I returned the extra library manual but no
sign of the users manual as yet (around two weeks or so). Is this normal
turn-around for MS on a problem of this sort. The compiler isn't much use
as it is.

Very interesting. I ordered a U.S. Robotics Courier 2400 external
modem from them, and I recieved a modem in a week. However, I recieved
a Microlink 2400 INTERNAL modem. This would be fine for my PC, but not for
my Atari ST. We also called them, and they told us that the boss was
"on the phone, and could he call me back." Of course, 4 hours later, he
hadn't, so we called up and demanded to talk to him.

I guess you should keep trying, as eventually I did get the right
modem, but it took a lot of fighting.

I myself ordered a memory board for my "toy", and received it
within 4 days. It turns out that the memory board would NOT
work on my machine, and they were VERY easy to deal with.
They provided an RMA number and issued credit to my plastic.
The best part was that since the sales person assured me that
it would work, I was not charged the standard restocking fee...

	No complaints from me.
