[net.micro.pc] Alternate Character Sets for EGA

myxm@lanl.ARPA (Mike Mitchell) (10/24/86)

Does anyone have any useful information on defining alternate characters
on the EGA by using the higher resoultion graphics mode? I have seen
this done on the color graphics adapter while in graphic mode. I have
also seen a demonstration of this on an EGA by a program called CHARGENI.

The end result of the information which I receive will be used to create
a "replacement rom" for the WordMarc program. These folks' program will
not operate properly on an IBM fitted with an EGA and monochrome moniter.
If I am able to redifine what the characters look like, then I may be
able to get WordMarc to properly display the scientific character set.

Does anyone have a copy of CHARGENI in source form or some other human
readable form (disassembled(?)) where I may be able to get some information
on they technique that was used? Specifically I am wanting to know what
registers need to be set up and what parameters need to be passed to
INT 10H to get this sucker to fly...

Thanx for any and all information which comes my way in advance.

Summary: Take a look at the Duke Language Toolkit

It sounds to me like what you want has already been done. The following
is from "QuickNotes", the PC-Write newsletter:

"Now available is the Duke Language Toolkit which allows PC-Write
users to produce Greek, Coptic, Amharic, Russian and Hebrew characters.
Even more important, it allows users to define their own character fonts.
"The Toolket was developed specifically for use with PC-Write by
Jeff Gillette of ... Duke University. It requires an EGA boards and works
with the Toshiba P351, IBM Proprinter, and Epson FX series printers."
"Gillette will send a copy of the Toolkit to anyone who sends him two
blank formatted diskettes and return postage. Direct your requests to:"

[Despite the references to PC-Write, this program works directly with the
EGA. PC-Write is very flexible in allowing you to map keys and key comb-
inations to different characters, which is what makes it nice for this
purpose]

IBM has now unbundled its EGA documentation from the expen$ive Options &
Adapters Manual. It will set you back the princley sum of $15.00 or
thereabouts. ($9.95 for the manual + $5.00 shipping + whatever salestax applies
in your area). Call (800) 426-7282 and ask for the "Enhanced Graphics Adapter"
manual (# 6280131).
This is not the most readible manual ever produced, but it should be a great
improvement over trying to decipher disassembled object code.
