I recently had to recover a file that had developed CRC errors on a few sectors. I had hoped that simply COPYing the file and ansewring "I" to the "Retry, Abort, Ignore" question would copy the whole file, garbage sectors and all, correcting the CRC error, but no such luck. It copied up to the first bad sector and then got lost. The rest of the file was garbage although I could see using Norton's Utilities that there was good data in the following sectors. I was using MSDOS 2.11 on an ATT 6300 by the way. I finally resorted to doing using Locksmith and doing a "Fast Backup" from the "Sector" menu do copy the whole disk. This did the trick but I would like to provide our reletively non-technical people (ie. secretaries) with the ability to recover their own files and I think LS is a bit complicated for this. What I'm wondering is: - Is there a way to recover as much data as possible from a munged file besides doing what I did, preferably using standard MSDOS commands; Also, does COPY work any better for this on higher MSDOS's? - Is there a program, PD or otherwise, that does someting similar to Locksith's Fast Backup (ie. a sector-by-sector copy); Incidently, this Fast Backup was significantly faster than "diskcopy" so such a routine would be nice even beyond the file recovery application.
