'Protecto Hold Me Tites'' Recalled After 2 Infants Choke to Death
WASHINGTON (AP) - Makers of a squeeze toy called the ''Protecto Hold
Me Tite'' are recalling the toy after two infants choked to death on
its handle, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Monday.
The commission said Reliance Products Corp. of Woonsocket, R.I.,
agreed to cooperate in the recall after reports that two infants under
6 months old, one in Jacksonville, Fla., and the other in Portland,
Ore., died of suffocation when the toy's handle became lodged in their
throats.
About 390,000 of the toys have been sold at about $2 each, the
commission said.
The toy is made in the shape of a pink elephant, a yellow bear or an
orange lion, each atop a handle, and has a built-in squeaker . It is
labeled ''Hold Me Tite'' assortment No. 06233. Stamped on the back is
''Reliance Products Corporation, Made in Taiwan.''
The CPSC said consumers should take the toy away from children
immediately.
The toys can returned to the stores where they were bought or to
Reliance at 108 Mason, P.O. Box 1220, Woonsocket, R.I., for a full
refund. Retailers should also return the toys to Reliance, the CPSC
said.
