I did not see the casket opening. I did notice with surprise that it was amazingly unscathed for something entering through some form of atmosphere and then impacting on the surface. It stuck me when I first saw the movie (I have seen it twice (20 for SW)) that they would not have wasted the footage on the casket if they didn't intend on "following up" in a later movie. At any rate, I suspect that Spock's casket could have some been effected by the last phases of the Genesis effect that was caused by Kahn's suicide. aps.

I am sure I remember that someone with connections with the producers (paramount(?)) was able to answer this question. As I recall, he assured us that their was nothing in the script about the casket opening...

I saw nothing pertaining to the opening of the casket, but when I see it again, I'll look more carefully. As for an idea as to how he will come back, how about this: Shatner will probably be getting tired of this role, so maybe in about 2 years spock will be recovered by a newer starship...maybe he'll even be sent back to the Enterprise with a new captain. (Maybe he'll be the captain!?) But I'm sure we'll see a bit of pairing of our newest female vulcan and spock. Whatever happens, I'll bet my sinclair she's involved in recovering him.
