It seems to me that I read many moons ago in "The Making of Star Trek"
or something that the year of departure from Earth (to begin their five-
year-mission) was 2273. I can't back this up, but I've had this
impression for awhile--before I even heard about the Romulan ale.
All this in spite of what was said in "Space Seed"--"You've been asleep
for two centuries." Assuming the SS Botany Bay left Earth in 1992,
this would approximate Trek's date sometime in the late 22nd Century.
Live long and prosper,

Stardates, as described in Making, are not just dates AD. They are based on many things such as position in the galaxy, warp speed?, galactic date, etc. The 1992 is a Julian date, hence you cannot subtract Apples and Oranges(atari's?) to get the time between.
