I'm thinking that the shuttle "Enterprise" was the gliding brick sans
engines that NASA used to perform design stability tests. If you remember,
it was launched off the back of a Boeing 747 and then allowed to (fall, fly,
glide, plummet) back to Earth as best it could.

The shuttle "Enterprise" has already appeared in an ST movie, though
not in any major way of course. In "ST: The Movie", (the infamous V...GER
story with 6 minutes of plot action and 3 hours of fill-in music), the
"Decker unit" is showing the V...GER clone of Ilea (sp?) around the ship.
They stop in the crew rec room and view a wall of images: an aircraft
carrier (?), the shuttle, and various nondescript vessles. "Each of these
was named Enterprise," says Decker. Good foreshadowing as well for V...GER.
