In the episode 'The First Federation' when the Enterprise is captured by the 'Phasarious' (sp ?) Mr. Spock looks up from his console and says (astonished) that the ship must be more than one mile in diameter. Cut to a exterior shot showing a huge vessel hovering over the Enterprise. But, if I remember correctly the Enterprise is supposed to be around 1km in length (this from one of those Enterprise posters a friend of mine had on his wall once). That would make it six tenths of a mile long. No vessel a mile in diameter would be that much bigger. They must have meant 10 or 20 miles. Or, maybe the special effects guys didn't read the script before shoting the scene. Does anyone know if this is corrected in the book version? Any explainations?

The name of the episode to which you are refering is not "The First Federation" but "The Corbomite Maneuver". Also the Starship Enterprise is approximately the same length as the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise, ~ 500 to 600 feet. This would make the Phesarius about 10 times the size of the Enterprise. Sparrow

Correction to the previous article: The Starship Enterprise is 1000 feet in length. Sparrow

The name of the episode with the Phasarious is the Corbomite Maneuver, not the First Federation.

The Enterprise is about 800 to 1000 ft. long - roughly the same length as a 1960's aircraft carrier. IN fact, it is almost exactly the same length as The USS Enterprise, CVAN 65. There is a overlay of NCC 1701 on CVAN 65 in the book "The Making Of Star Trek" by Steven Whitfeild(sp?). At first Enterprise was to be 200 ft. long, but it grew before any incriminating references were made in the show. It also got shuttle craft, and the crew grew from 200 to 400. If Enterprise was still thought to be 200 ft. long when the episode "THE CORBOMITE MANEUVER" was filmed, the 'First Federation' ship is in the right scale. Note that Gene had not thought up the 'United Federation of Planets', yet, either. The Enterprise is operated under the authority of the "United Earth Space Probe Agency". It appears that the 'First Federation' was the seed which grew into the 'United Federation of Planets'.

According to the star trek blueprints, the length of the enterprise is 288.646 meters or 947 feet.

The Enterprise was compared to the USS Forrestal in the book The Making of Star Trek. The above comparison stated the length of the aircraft carrier at 1010 feet, as measured from the stern of the flight deck to the bow. If we count the engine nacelles, then the Enterprise is of equivalent size, however, check the overlay again ad you'll see that from the leading edge of the saucer to the shuutle bay doors only comes to the end of the Forrestal's island. This makes the Enterprise only about 700 feet. Terry (walked the filght deck in the Navy) Dexter tad @ aplvax

The enterprise is more like 1/4 mile long *ala blueprints*
