I have to agree with Thom Brando. It was the bad Kirk with the scratches. I think where Nathan got confused is right before the bridge scene the bad Kirk encounters Yeoman Janice in the turbo-lift and tries to act like the good Kirk. He apologizes for his "bad double" and tells her that the "bad double" even scratched his face to make him look bad. The scratches he showed her though were in fact the scratches she had made. Janice doesn't quite believe his story but he invites her to his cabin (or invites himself to hers) later to explain the matter - of course he has ulterior motives! OZZIE houxf!osborn
