You may also be confusing that episode with "A Taste of Armageddon"
(not certain of the title), where the Enterprise ends up caught between
two planets that are fighting a computer war that's gone on for hundreds
of years.  Computers fight the war -- but the people do the real dying.
It was supposed to save their cultures and ways of life...does that ring
a bell?
