Kirk of course DID make a permanent record of stranding Khan and party on this planet--it was part of the ship's log. It was, however, classified on Kirk's suggestion. Should others learn of the existence of many genetically enhanced individuals from the late 20th century, they might be so curious as to travel to Ceti Alpha V and both endanger themselves and provide Khan with a means of escape by which he would attempt to conquer the galaxy, most likely. -- Roger Noe ...ihnp4!ihlts!rjnoe

Just out of curiosity -- assuming that Starfleet did classify the location of Khan's group on Ceti Alpha V, would there not have been some notification given to Captain Terrell (sp?) upon his entering that area? Perhaps a tag tied into the navigational computer to warn the captain to contact Starfleet for an explanation of the classified nature of the system? Having read the novelization of STII by Vonda McIntyre, I also find it interesting that Chekov (I know, I know, it should have been Sulu, but that's another nit) *remembered* the Ceti Alpha system, but didn't remember *why* he remembered it. Add to that curiosity the fact that the *Reliant's* scan of the system didn't match with the information from their navigation banks -- which should have caused Terrell to call "back home" for some confirmation, at which point the warning could have been given...and none of this was in the movie anyway, so why do I keep flogging the issue? re: leaving Khan on Ceti Alpha ? I tend to think that Kirk did NOT log this incident, since the action of leaving Khan's crew on the planet was certainly done out of "respect" for Khan and was possibly contrary to Starfleet regulations (Khan probably would have been sent to some sort of prison colony). This in fact explains why the Reliant had no idea that there was anyone/anything on any of the Ceti Alpha planets (they had to do a thorough survey). Chekov (inappropriately) may have remembered Ceti Alpha, but did not associate system with Khan.

The last scene on 'Space Seed' was an formal hearing to determine if a trial and a court martial were to be conducted. All senior officers were present. It is impossible to assume that a proceeding of this nature was not recorded. sparrow

I believe the novelization of the movie clears up these points:
1. Kirk did report it and had it classified to prevent curiosity seekers
from visiting just to look.
2. Just because Chekov was not on ST that season does not mean he wasn't
on the Enterprise. In fact, it is stated that he was basically a rookie
and had indeed seen Khan.
3. It is also stated that the only survey records that were available came
from an old survey vessel, and that such records were often in error.

Kirk would have no reason not to record the event. Star Fleet law dictatated that Kahn have his choice. This was NOT a decision Kirk made... What a shame the key scene to the issue died on the cutting room floor of WPIX (read: your favorite independent). Marc Schare- BTL Piscataway
