In an episode of Star Trek shown this weekend on channel 32 (WFLD) here in Chicago, there was an inconsistency regarding the speed of the Enterprise. This episode was the one with the Enterprise transporting the Medusan ambassador (The Medusans are a race that the mere viewing of their bodies causes insanity to humans). When Larry Marvik is exposed to the Medusan ambassador and subsequently becomes insane, he goes to Engineering and takes control of the Enterprise using the Auxiliary controls. On the bridge, this is noticed by Sulu and Chekhov. Sulu says "Captain, I don't believe it, but we are travelling at Warp 8.5 and still rising!". Later when the Enterprise is lost beyond the edge of the Galaxy (I don't understand why this would happen), Spock , in his analysis of the situation, says that the Enterprise entered a space-time continuum when its velocity exceeded Warp 9.5. How did Larry Marvik manage to get the Enterprise to move so fast???? Allen England at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Naperville, IL ihnp4!ihuxb!alle

During the filmed television episodes, there were several occasions when the Enterprise went faster than its maximum emergency speed of warp 8. In "The Changeling," Nomad modified the engines to travel at warp 11. Similarly, the Kelvans modified the Enterprise to travel at warp 11 in "By Any Other Name." Apparently these changes were never permanently installed. In "Is There in Truth No Beauty," the Enterprise went out of control at warp 9.5. I believe the Enterprise was out of control at warp 9 in "Day of the Dove" (although I'm not quite sure offhand -- triviasts please verify). Finally, the highest speed recorded for the Enterprise in the filmed shows was warp 14.1, in "That Which Survives." To go from the sublime to the ridiculous, the Enterprise was clocked at warp 22 in one of the animated episodes, "The Counter-Clock Incident."
