[net.startrek] chekov and khan

milan@psddevl.UUCP (milan) (12/08/83)

I think this has been explored before, but is it not true that in the
original series, Chekov never appeared in the episode where Khan tried
to take over the Enterprise? If this be the case, why did Chekov utter
a stifled "KHAN" when the two met in the new Khan movie?
  *sigh*

netnews is real wierd. I first read this news group
once a long time ago then unsubscribed.
I read this newsgroup for the "second-time-ever" today.
This question was around one-year ago and the answer comes
second hand from when I read it one-year ago.

The same question,
"How did Chekov know Kahn ?"

The answer:
" In the book, Chekov meets Kahn, I think in fact
	becomes one of Kahn's guards"

I never read the book, this answer was drawn from a dusty spot
in my head.
Only twice I've read this newsgroup, spaced by about one year.
And both times I saw the same subject.

Yes, Chekov never appeared in the episode 'Space Seed'. However,
just a little bit of ingenuity clears up this problem. Just think,
I know for a fact that Sulu didn't appear in 'The Trouble with Tribbles'.
Would anyone argue that he wasn't on the Enterprise somewhere? The same
for Chekov. Just because we weren't shown the other 400 crewmen or so
every show shouldn't cause us to question their existence.

This was already discussed some months ago. The explanation is simple:

During the episode, "Space Seed", there had been an fault in the
on-board food processors that allowed a virus to be passed through.
This virus causes something similar to our present-day diarrhea.
All of the ships personnel were infected, including Khan (this
explains his various spasms of feeling "fatigued"). Checkov
was indeed on board, but he was one of the first to contract the
disease, and thus was not present on the bridge or around much.
Just after Khan excused himself from the formal dinner party
that Kirk threw in his honor, he made a beeline for a restroom.
When he arrived, of course, he had to wait for quite a while
to use the facility. He became increasingly angry and distressed,
and when Checkov finally came out, Khan viciously breathed:

		"This face, I will remember."
