<Wombat repelling line...> Well, I just heard on the radio a few moments ago that Gene Rodenberry(sp?) is coming to Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada) on February 16. He is apparently going to be bringing the pilot for the Star-Trek series that has never been released. This pilot apparentely did NOT have William Shatner as Capt. Kirk. Any netters out their with more information/speculations etc? Maybe its the chap who played the Enterprises previous captain? He appeared in one episode (a two-parter). I can't remember his name but he was in a wheel-chair and could only communicate by blinking a light on the front panel of his chair. Or maybe it was just a stranger. Funny, its hard to picture the Enterprise without Captain James T Kirk as played by Will Shatner... Chmee (Speaker to Animals)

While the pilot episode was never actually show as a whole show, a lot
of it was canabalized and used in "The Menagerie (sp?)." That's the
two parter with Capt. Christopher Pike.
I didn't see anything about it, but if Gene was going to Nova Scotia, I
would guess it has something to do with ST3:ISOS (or is it TSFS?). I
don't think principal photography has been completed yet, and that seems
like a good place to do some Genesis Planet scenes. Then again, to meet
a Christmas deadline, they might have finished already, so I may not have
any idea what's going on!

According to early ST lore, (Whitfield et al.) the first pilot from 1964
was entitled "The Cage". It featured Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher
Pike, Nimoy as an alien ( but emotional ) Spock, Majel Roddenberry ( We know
her as Nurse Christine Chapel ) as an UNemotional character named Number One,
Llyod Hanyes ( the teacher from Room 222 ) as Alden, a bridge officer, and
other character changes. A comparision of "The Cage" to "Where No Man Has
Gone Before" ( the two pilots ) points out some of the changes Roddenberry
considered necessary. Pike/Hunter was too glamorous and athletic a character,
even though Jim develops quite an athletic posture himself. The doctor (Boyce?)
was too Marcus Welbyish, while McCoy's downhomeness is counterbalanced by
his cynicism an activity in so many landing parties ( Why must the chief
Surgeon always be on hand to examine life forms that he probably has as much
difficulty with as any other general practitioner??). The characters of Spock
and Number One were coalesced into one being, a wise decision which we all
probably applaud.

Gene gave a talk at Oregon State University in Oct 82 (Approx) and brought
both "The Cage" and "Star Trek Bloopers". It was well attended and well
worth seeing. One interesting comment was that after they made "The Cage",
they screened it with test audiences and found that a lot of people did not
like the idea of a woman as second in command of a starship. That received
negative comments from both men and women.

You won't find this out by comparing "The Cage" to "WNMHGB", as McCoy
wasn't in the latter, either. He was not added until after both pilots.
I think the first episode he filmed was the one with the Salt Vampire
(arg, I should be able to remember its title, but it escapes me).

The "salt monster" episode was the first show actually aired (as the "Sneak Preview" - I remember it well!) but it was not the first show filmed after the two pilots. That episode, the first with Dr. McCoy, was "The Corbomite Maneuver". Phil
