This is a review of FASA's role playing game, STAR TREK. If you really get into both Star Trek and love role playing games, this might just be for you. You assume the roles of officers in Star Fleet and are assigned to your own starship (Constitution class ship). It takes brains, concentration, luck, skill, and all those other thing that one would expect from something alot more complicated. My friends and I played a simualtion game the other evening. Here follows a brief synopsis: Our "DM" had us roll up our characters and they were then assigned to their roles. We had our Captain, First Officer, Navigator, Helmsman, Com- munications officer, Medical Chief, and Security Chief. We each had our own races as well. The Captain, Navigator, Helmsman, and Doctor were all Humans. The First Officer, of course, was Vulcan, the Communications officer was Catian, and the Security Chief was Andorian. The Head of Security, who is half Terran and half Orion, was on sick leave. He assigned us to the U.S.S. Exeter, a Constitution class starship. In our first simulated mission, we were called to help a robot frieghter, the Coonour. Unfourtunately for the good guys, there was two Klingon D-7's in the way. The Captain moved to rescue the frieghter. The Science officer could detect no debris or other ships, so the Captain suspected a trap. He approached the Klingon vessels with shields up and weapons armed. We then engaged in battle with the Klingons. After a fierce fight, we pulled out on top. We took 50 casulities, and alot of superstructure damage. As it turned out, the robot cruiser was a fake set up to lure unsuspecting Feds into the jaws of the Klingon Empire. As for the game itself, we all had bunches of fun. Since all of us are avid Trekkies, we all had fun assuming the roles of our favorite Star Trek type characters. Alot of fun we had came from bouncing around the room when the 'bridge' was hit with 'disruptors'. We had one minor bridge injury when the doctor bounced over the chair he was sitting in when the bridge was hit and landed on his sore muscle. I, as the Andorian Security Chief, didn't have a lot of work in the ship-to-ship scenario. In all, the game was bunches of fun. The battle took just about 3 hours, but considering we were all a little inexperienced in playing the game, it probably took longer than it should have. To close this long winded message up, I suggest that you at least look at the game and give it a try. If anybody else has played before and has any suggestions or comments that he/she can give to a beginning Security Chief, or to any of our players, please mail them to me. Thanks in advance.... Is there a role for people in red or gold shirts who die really quickly, left & right? I'm sure that would add to the Star Trek realism. "Well, Jim, extra #29841 just bit the dust...." Moriarty
