When I saw the episode in which the Enterprise left the galaxy I was surprised to hear the crew referring to some kind of barrier at the edge of our galaxy. Is there really such a barrier? Or is this just fiction for the sake of the T.V. show? I all ways thought that the stars in our galaxy became more spread out toward the edge. Could the spiral motion of the galaxy have anything to do with a barrier? Are there any current scientific theories on this subject? I sure would like to know. Jerry Donovan ih1ap!jgd

There is no barrier of any sort at the "edge" of the galaxy, but somewhere beyond the limits of the observable universe there is quite possibly a "domain wall" where the forces of nature (strong, weak, electromagnetic) get rearranged. If it weren't so far away it would make a good sf topic.
