[net.startrek] Plot Similarities

<Nonsense, Ensign, the transporter is working properly. And wipe that
 smile off your elbow!>

I'm new to the net, so I humbly beg forgiveness if this subject has
 been covered before.

What about Star Trek episodes based on movies? The plotline of
"Balance of Terror" is EXTREMELY similar to that of a late 50s/early
60s war movie. There are similar plot twists, similar characters, but
the endings are slightly different because ST is (was) a series.
Can anyone:
          1. Name that movie
	  2. Find any other close ST/movie simularities?
(For those with less than total episode recall, "Balance of Terror"
is the one with the Romulan "Bird of Prey" ship attacking Earth
outposts.)

The 50's movie that you refer to is "The Enemy Below", starring Robert
Mitchum and Kurt Jergens -- not a bad film and an excellent soundtrack.

The Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror" was very similar to the movie
"Run Silent, Run Deep". In one seen, the submarine shuts of all power
and send up debris; pretending to be hit.

Similarly, the episode "Arena" was based on a short story by the same
name, written by Fredric Brown. That story appears in "The Science
Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume I". In it, a man picked at random from the
Earth fleet by a powerful force battles a member of the opposing fleet
- a red spherical object one yard in diameter. Its very good story;
read it if you can.

I'm not sure about this one but I believe that "The Doomsday Machine",
by Norman Spinrad is supposed to be based on "Moby Dick".

There was a suggestion made that perhaps "The Doomsday Machine"
was based in part on "Moby Dick". I also find this hard to
believe and would like to say that the episode "Obsession"
had many similarities with "Moby Dick". Kirk was almost as
irrational as Ahab when he discovered his 'white whale'.

Does anybody agree or disagree??

Of course! It was "The Enemy Below" that "Balance of Terror" was based on.
