If I can remember correctly --- I don't think it was actually said on the show, but in some written form --- Chekov was being "groomed" for command during his tenure on the show. Apparently, he made it, considering his position as First Officer on the *Reliant* in THE WRATH OF KHAN. Of course, we all know that Sulu was about to take his first command in TWOK, and the training cruise was basicly his last activity as a "free man". I also got the impression in TWOK that Saavik was being specificly trained for a command position. Speaking of THE WRATH OF KHAN, I happened to watch it on Showtime the other night, and noticed something I hadn't noticed before --- the turtlenecks underneath the uniform jackets seem to be color-coded, though I can't figure out just what the code is. Kirk, Spock, and Terrell all wear white; Saavik's is orange; McCoy's, Uhura's, and Chekov's are gray. I only noticed these about half way through, so I wasn't able to catch any others' (Sulu's was indistinguishable since the times when it was visible was during red alerts, when the bridge was bathed in red light). I haven't gotten around to check my tape of it. The only sense I can make of the code might be that Captains and higher wear white, with some other insignia to indicate specific rank; Commanders and Lt. Commanders wear gray; and Lieutenants (and maybe Ensigns?) wear orange. Comments? Ideas? --- jayembee (Jerry Boyajian, DEC Maynard, MA) UUCP: {decvax|ihnp4|allegra|ucbvax|...}!decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-akov68!boyajian ARPA: boyajian%akov68.DEC@DECWRL.ARPA *NOTE CHANGE IN ADDRESSING*
