[net.startrek] Comments from Harve Bennett on ST III

I attended the Starlog festival in LA last Sunday.
Harve Bennett, writer and executive producer of ST III
was the guest. (Nimoy had served on Saturday.) Harve
talked for an hour and showed the slides which have
been described previously , but he made quite a few
comments on them.

STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT HINTS

He said the film will be deeply emotional, but satisfying.
"You can see I've got all my marbles", he said, "The film has
been titled The Search for Spock for two years. What kind of
schmuck would title a movie The Search for Spock and then say
Oops! we lost him again?"

Showing the slides, he put on one showing McCoy sitting at
a control panel. He said he is sitting at Spock's science
station in one of his pensive moods. I noted that McCoy's
right eyebrow is raised.

Another slide showed director Nimoy demonstrating to De Kelley
how to perform the Vulcan neck pinch.

Asked what sort of role McCoy plays, Harve shot back "pivotal".
He repeated the word several times. He also launched into lavish
praise for De's acting ability.

Other comments from Harve: Nicholas Meyer says ST III is better
than II. He can't conceive of there not being a IV. There have
been three screenings before selected audience. One was in NYC
and contained trekfen. He described the reaction as raucously
enthusiastic. Another contained folks who never heard of ST
[is that possible?] or who had no interest in it. This audience
was very quiet. Harve said he turned to Leonard and said "We're
dead." But Leonard said no, listen to the tension . Sure enough
everyone was breathing audibly. At the end they applauded
with great enthusiasm. Harve said he and LN decided that this
audience was behaving as if they were at a symphony where one
doesn't comment or applaud until the end.

Another comment: There are lots of things in this movie that
only really sharp ST fans will pick up on. Also Chekov says
something in Russian which is not translated.. The Bird of
Prey ship is Klingon because of an military equipment sales
deal between Romulans and Klingons.

Years ago, during the STII discussion, somebody pointed out that Spock
might have transferred himself to McCoy (he said "remember") before he died.
Could that net reader actually have been right?

'Tis but the pale reflex of Cynthia's brow..."

Question: From what I remember, were not the Klingon and Romulan empires
on opposite sides of the Federation??
