[net.startrek] The Cage, videotapes, etc.

This is directed to Roger Goun but I wanted to post it instead of sending mail
to R. Goun. As far as I know, "The Cage" was never shown on TV (at least
here in LA). Usually the original of anything is better than what is aired
since TV exec's seem to feel that they MUST edit a story. Roger Noe also
indicated that the TV exec's felt that the "The Menagerie" was too cerebral
for most TV audiences.

I do not know for sure (thought I made this clear, maybe not, I apologize),
but here in LA, Star Trek reruns were taken off of the air. Paramount keeps
threatening to put them back on the air, but as of yet have not. Since
Paramount plans to sell the video tapes, they would not want people to copy
ST off the air using their video tape recorders. I suspect after Paramount
starts selling the video tapes, ST will be put back on the air but I do not
know that for sure, it is only a feeling.

I think it was thirteen not eighteen years earlier that Spock's trial and
the story that he put on the view screen took place.

The episode that you are referring to is the one where the people were
worshipping a dragonlooking mountain which was actually a computer. I
cannot remember what they called it, but they had to feed (?) it every
once in a while. It would call to the people. There were no children and
all of the humanoids were very old and very tanned (but looked very young and
muscluar). David Soul (remember him from Starsky and Hutch) played in it. At
any rate, what I remember from the episode, Kirk told Scotty to do what ever
was necessary to get the ship out of the tractor beam's influence. No real
mention of jettisoning the saucer from the warp engine's was mentioned.
Everyone who has followed ST knows of this feature of the ship, but as far as I
can recall, I do not ever remember it being mentioned in any episode. And, the
saucer completely detaches from the cigar shaped (engineering, computers, and
shuttle bays) and engine narcelles. Only the saucer and impulse engines remain.
