I empathize with these feelings. The Enterprise *was* the centerpiece of
the TV Star Trek. I, too, knew what Kirk was feeling in that scene. I never
considered that scene to be too long, never realized it screwed up the pacing
of the entire film because time stood still for me during that scene, each time
I saw the movie. I have always been awed by the beauty of Enterprise and will
miss it. I loved the subtle but significant changes in Enterprise in that
movie. And then she was damaged in ST2 and now she'll die. It won't be the
OLD Star Trek without Enterprise, but it will still be Star Trek.

It's new and different. It's more about the people, and I like it better that
way. The only reason it was not so in the series is because not enough of an
audience could have been attracted in that critical first season for it to
survive had they done things that way. But I also said that it wouldn't be
the old Star Trek without Spock. If we can get Spock back, we can certainly
get Enterprise back, although both in different forms. All the starships
mentioned destroyed in the series were also renamed (as totally new ships), so
you can be certain that ST4 will be about Enterprise II. What I'll miss most
then is NCC-1701. But, like THX-1138, it's all arbitrary. Maybe they'll
number it NCC-1966 to commemorate the year ST began. I just hope they'll have
the good sense to make it a pleasing design. Disappointment is reasonable,
but not despair. I believe that "there are always possibilities". Enjoy
what does exist and the diversity in those things.
