I'm a little curious. In ST:II, does Chechov ever get his hearing back
in the ear that had the super-slug in it? I personally found that part
incredibly gross and have to look away every time (HBO shows it) Mr.
Rourke (sorry, Kahn) puts that baby in their ear. Yuch!!!

When Kirk says, "Of all the souls I have known ... his was the most
(pause) human", Saavik looks funny. I'm not quite sure how to interpret
that facial change. Is she moved by Spocks death or annoyed that Kirk
called him human?

Would you buy a Cordoba from Kahn?

The way I interpreted it, she was moved by what Kirk said. She is also
only half Vulcan (the other half Romulan), and she has been trying to
learn to suppress her emotions. Kirk makes her realize that there is
something to be said about being human, and maybe emotions are not just
things that must be suppressed, but which can be used.

I don't notice that he ever loses his hearing. After the thing leaves his
ear, the next time we see him, he's responding to what the people around
him say--and he doesn't seem to be favoring his left ear. Seems that his
hearing OUGHT to be affected, but....

Incidentally, what makes the thing leave Chekhov, anyway?

I'd interpret Saavik's facial response in neither of the two ways suggested.
Rather, I think Kirk just gave her something subtly profound to think about
--certainly, something she hadn't considered before.

    RE: superslug

In ordinary medical ways, once the eardrum is punctured hearing is
lost unless the membrane is restored. Of course a small thing like
this is no problem for thr great Dr. McCoy.

In reference to Saavik, if you noticed she passed a comment on
the training simulator which implies that she is like Spock,
half human. In Star Trek III don't be suprised if J.T. Kirk
has an affair with Saavik. If one watches the movie very
carefully you can see that Saavik is not a full breed Vulcan.
Also Spock comes back as a wizard (Vulcan Style). The movie
should be realased in late summer/early fall .

If you'll notice, the "slug" never went through the eardrum (at least
that we could see)--it burrowed into the brain right through the ear
CANAL. It also appeared (at least to this reporter) to exit in a
similar manner.

Incidently, when an eardrum is merely punctured, hearing is not lost;
impaired somewhat yes. I know firsthand since I once had a perforated
eardrum, and could hear fairly well through that ear (It's now
healed--95% hearing remains). Now if the eardrum was ripped apart...

NO NO NO. Saavik is a half-Vulcan, half-Romulan. This point is made in
the novelization taken from the script.

How did they do it? Male romulan gives drugs to female vulcan to make
her receptive, then commits rape. Of course, normal Vulcans would NOT
be comfortable around Saavik, even though they claim to have no emotions,
since normal Vulcans merely SUPPRESS emotions. Also, they have an
historically demonstrated distaste for "halfbreeds" and only Spock would
be likely to accept her.

Kirk (shatner, actually) is getting too old to fit the MBAssh*le view
of what "the public" will identify with, for a romantic figure. Since
the MBAssh*les run the studios, while Kirk may be the romantic figure
in this one, expect the next one to have someone else.

In regards to the comment about Savik. I has been my impression, I
forget how I got it, that Savvik was half-Vulcan and half-Romulan.
Don't ask me to explain it, but she does show signs of romulan blood
during the movie. Compare her to the female Romulan Captian in
"The Enterprise Incident". A Kirk-Savvik love affair. What would
David think?

In reference to Saavik, she was NOT half human. She is half Vulcan and
half Romulan. Also in reference to Chekov's ear, I believe the "eel"
sort of "somehow" slithered through the eardrum without any damage,
(or so stated in the book).
