[net.startrek] My position re: STAR TREK

My general feelings about STAR TREK:
It occurred to me that maybe it would be a good idea to mention my gen-
eral position as regards ST, as Moriarty did in his review of STIII, so that you
will know where I'm coming from in my opinions on the recent movie.
I like the show a fair amount. I don't consider myself a "trekkie" or a
"trekker" or whatever; I just enjoy the show (I'm amused by the fact that des-
pite my not being too involved in the show, when I watch a re-run, I can usually
tell within a minute or two which episode it is). I collect the novels, though I
don't get *any* of the fanzines. I'm considering getting all of the episodes on
videotape when they beome available, even if I think some of them are rotten (it
is a rough life, the life of a completist).
My five favorite episodes are: (1) "Mirror, Mirror"; (2) "City on the
Edge of Forever"; (3) "Balance of Terror"; (4) "The Enterprise Incident"; and
(5) "The Conscience of the King". My five least favorites are: (1) "And the
Children Shall Lead"; (2) "Spock's Brain"; (3) "The Way to Eden"; (4) "The Cloud
Minders"; and (5) "The Apple".
As to the movies: well, I rather *liked* STtMP as a film, though I agree
that it wasn't very good Trek. It didn't plod for me, except maybe the outside
tour of the *Enterprise* in drydock. Some things I didn't like, but overall I
enjoyed it. I thought the expanded version shown on tv was better than the orig-
inal, containing some scenes that defined some of the characters better. TWOK I
thought was fabulous! What with the times it's shown on cable, and having a vid-
eotape copy, I've seen it maybe a dozen or more times, and I'm not tired of it
at all. TSFS, well, you know about that already. As I said in my review, I *did*
enjoy it somewhat, but was really disappointed for the most part. I didn't think
it was nearly as good as TWOK, nor was it quite as well produced a film (though
it was much better Trek) as STtMP.
I'm planning to see it again sometime this week in Boston, mostly just
because I'd like to see it in 70mm (if I saw it in 70 the first time, I doubt
that I'd want to see it again). I'll probably buy a videptape of it when it be-
comes available (if it's in Beta Hi-Fi, which I'm sure it will be), but until
then, I probably won't see it again.
