I saw "The Search For Spock" on the opening day, June 1, here in LA. I thought that the movie was great. Of course, I will return to see it when the lines die down. Here is my impression of the movie. It was nicely done and in most instances, done well. As usual, there were a few technological things that were not followed such as detecting a ship using a cloaking device. I thought that the Federation sent Spock and Kirk to intercept the Romulans to steal the cloaking device so that they could learn how to detect a ship using the device. The science ship orbiting the Genesis planet would have shields and be able to detect a ship using a cloaking device especially if the ship is moving. The captain did not raise the shields and was blown to smitherings. The Federation should have suspected that the Federation enemies would try to find out about the Genesis device and had some sort of protection, even if minimal (but SOME protection). Both movies, ST:TWOK and ST:TSFS, ships machinery was subject to breakdowns at the most inappropriate moments. The Enterprises shields were inperative (again) just when they were needed. The Klingon ships shields did not protect them at all. The Excelsior's (trans) warp drive could not be repaired quickly enough to follow the Enterprise (although the movie did not let us know what Commander Scott did to the controls). I could go on. On a positive note, the movie was not completely predictable (like ROTJ) which is quite nice. People are either going to like this movie or hate it. It is a cliff hanger (setup for the next movie if there is one), so I hope that it does well. Well, as the discussion for the third movie gets into full swing, I will add some additional comments.
