Brief review: I loved it. Sure, there were a LOT of faults, but I always liked the characterization in ST best, and that's what ST3:TSFS beat all the previous ST films in. More detailed opinion coming, maybe, if time permits... Damn Paramount and Harve Bennett anyway, for killing off the Enterprise. And bless their little souls for providing Star Trek, real Star Trek, where a long-time fan can sit back and accept the newest testament of gospel. The novelization illuminates some points -- like what would have happened to Spock's katra in the normal case, i.e., if his body weren't recovered still alive. And it makes its inconsistent adaptations to Vonda McIntyre's own little ST spinoff universe. (McIntyre's novel cannot be reconciled with the DC Comics series, though the film can be. Both are private versions of ST.) One little erratum, which crept into the book as well: Scotty, during the destruct sequence, identifies himself to the computer as Commander, even though he's wearing Captain's bars (and it's about time, too!). Okay, maybe he knew the personnel records hadn't been updated since his promotion, but it's still jarring. -- Back with a brand new address, after 10 whole days away from the net...
