[net.startrek] Sulu's Rank

timd@iddic.UUCP (06/16/84)

I Have Seen Several Postings Referring To Sulu As A Lt. Cmdr. Or A
Cmdr.

St:Twok (And Especially The Novelization) Very Plainly State That
Sulu Is Now A Captain. The Same Sources Also Have Spock As A Captain,
And Uhura, Scott, And Chekov As Commanders.

Rank Question: When Admiral Morrow Verbally Gave Scott Orders To
Report As "Captain Of Engineering On The Excelsior", Was He
Actually Promoted To Captain? Captain Seems To Be An Rather
High Rank For An Engineering (Non-Line) Officer, Especially If
He Serves Under A Captain. (Was James Sikking A Captain?)

Does Anyone Care? :-)
(Please Don'T Say Sikking Is A Lt.... That'S On The Uss Hillstreet. :-)

I have seen several postings (mostly those about the Federation holding
tank) in which Sulu is referred to as a Lt. Cmdr.

ST:Twok (and especially its novelization) clearly state Sulu to be
a newly-promoted Captain.

The same sources also establish Dr. McCoy, Uhura, Scott and Chekov to
be Commanders.

I was wondering that also, so when STII:TWOK came by The Movie Channel this
month, I paid close attention to uniforms. The strap that holds the front
"flap" of the uniforms seems to have a rank insignia. Kirk wore a star.
Spock and Terrel wore something that looked like:
	^
	=
	v
Sulu, Scotty, Chekov, etc. seemed to be wearing the same thing, namely
	v
	=
	^
So it would seem the movies have Sulu as a Commander. Anyone else notice
this? I have yet to confirm this with a second viewing, so I could be
wrong.

I agree on Sulu's rank of Captain.

The novelization brought out the fact that not only was he a captain,
but he was to be given command of the Excelsior (before the genesis stuff
hit the fan).

"Captain of engineering" can easily be made a sort of honorary title
so that Scotty can keep his rank, but the real problem is Sulu.
The novel has Sulu Knowing that he will be the new Captain of the Excelsior
while he is on board the Enterprise. In fact, he was neglecting his new
ship in favor of Kirk and the Enterprise (a fake inspection).
