<These are the voyages of the starship. . .Excelsior??> (1) I'm surprised how many people seem to be taking things in Star Trek comics seriously (whether movie adaptations or those silly Gold Key things)! I recall one old comic which had the Enterprise passing through a meteor storm. . .and the meteor(ites) pierced the hull and went through the bridge. No one suffered any effects due to air loss, etc. I always thought that, by popular opinion, those comics were *not* considered part of the "valid" Star Trek universe of facts for obvious reasons. (2) Concerning the new ranks of main characters: I don't believe that there is any rule saying a "captain" must be in command of his own starship. (In the past, we've seen commodores in command and at desk jobs, and now admirals in the same position.) It's my understanding that RANK and POSITION are two different things: (In the TV series) person rank position ================================================================= Kirk captain starship command Spock commander first/science officer Uhura lieutenant communications officer etc. However, I believe that there *is* a minimum rank associated with a given position. I have good reason to believe this, although I can't remember my sources; however, I do think there is a (questionable) source in the Star Trek Blueprints which makes some sort of association. Correct me if I'm wrong; my copy is 600 miles away. -- Bill Bulko Department of Computer Sciences The University of Texas {ihnp4,ctvax,seismo}!ut-sally!bulko
