uok!dwhitney does not have his or her facts correct.

In "The Changling," the NOMAD does not collide with a meteorite.  Instead,
it collides with another, alien space probe called TAN RUE.  TAN RUE's
mission was to collect and sterilize soil samples.  NOMAD's was to search
out life forms.  They repaired themselves and combined powers and missions.
The resulting mission was "to search out and sterilize imperfect life forms."
