I think many people find Chekhov expendable and not too likable because he is more of a caricature than a character. At least that was true in the series--they improved him somewhat for TWOK. His insistence that everything was done first in Russia was childish and chauvinistic, and seemed very much an anachronism. The accent was pretty awful, too, and it was distracting. But I think he lacked the basic character development we found in the other major characters. Except for one episode when we found out about a former lover, we never knew anything about him except his place of origin.
