THE AGING EFFECT OF GENESIS I don't think that Genesis should have had on Saavik the effect it had on Spock. (Why, incidentally, if one did think Genesis should have an effect on Saavik, should one not also think it should have one on David?) Saavik remarks to David that Spock and the planet "seem to be linked together". David says shortly, "They are," in the manner of someone who knows more and doesn't want to talk about it. It was the same way in which he brushed off the orange oozy things and refused to answer Saavik's question, "But how could they have evolved so quickly?" I rather admired this touch in the movie; it managed to give the impression that there was some good reason that Spock was linked to the planet, without ever having to say outright what it was. Also, when Kirk asks McCoy if there's anything they can do for Spock, Saavik replies that the only thing they can do is to get him off this planet, because he is ageing with it. Presumably the same effect that regenerated his molecules (sigh) in the first place is also responsible for the ageing effect. Since Saavik and David weren't caught in that original effect, they would not age with the planet. -------- PDDB
